‘Sore Loser’ Laws Could Derail Trump’s Presidential Hopes

On more than one occasion, Donald Trump has floated the idea of running as a third party candidate if he feels that the primary process has been “unfair.” But there are laws called “Sore Loser” Laws on the books in 6 states that would bar him from running as a third party candidate if he was on the primary ballot already in the state. Without these 6 states, a third party run is doomed to fail, as Farron Cousins explains. Link – https://www.rawstory.com/trump-running-third-party/ Don’t forget to like, comment, and share! Donald Trump has repeatedly hinted at the fact that if he doesn’t feel that the 2024 primary process is fair, which probably just means if he doesn’t win the 2024 Republican primaries that he would consider running as a third party candidate. Well, according to a new report from Bloomberg, that’s actually gonna be a little bit more difficult than Donald Trump thinks, because there are six states in the country that represent 91 of the electoral college votes that you’d need to become president. Um, six states that have on the books what’s called Soar loser laws, and those laws explicitly prohibit a candidate who lost a primary race for the presidency to run as a third party in that state. So just to explain it, if you’re a Republican and you’re on the ballot in these states, uh, for a Republican presidential primary and you lose, you can’t go back to that same state register to run for president as an independent. Those sore loser laws prevent that. And wouldn’t it just be the greatest irony on the planet if Donald Trump’s third party plans got foiled because of soar loser laws, I think that is the most appropriate thing that could possibly happen to him. Those states, by the way, some very vital swing states, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Arkansas, and Alabama. So you got three swing states that pretty much, if you can solidify those, you you can win an election. And then you’ve got the solid red states, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, they’re gonna go Republican no matter what. Now, here’s the issue that legal experts are pointing out. Uh, these laws have never actually been tested in court. So if Trump did want to launch a third party campaign after losing a Republican primary, these laws would kick in, at which point his team would likely challenge them in court. And again, because they’ve never really been challenged, we don’t know what’s gonna happen. These laws may not stand, I mean, to prevent somebody who is technically eligible from running for office just because you don’t want them running against your political party, uh, that kind of seems unconstitutional. I mean, I’ll just be honest, that doesn’t seem like a law that’s gonna stand up in court. But also, let’s, let’s not forget that if you were to lose the Republican primaries, when do the primaries and caucuses in, well, like June of next year, so maybe even July for a couple of the later ones. So you wouldn’t even have enough time to test them in court if you lost the primary, then had to launch a third party bit. Like that’s gonna be a disaster in and of itself. You’re gonna have to go through all the courts and the appellate process to the Supreme Court, like Within a week. So that’s probably a little difficult. But most importantly, I hope these laws get struck down because we want Trump to run as a third party candidate. Everybody knows that a third party Republican is going to guarantee a democratic victory. And of course, that that’s at least what I want, I’m sure most people watching this video are like, yes, we also want that. So I hope these sore loser laws get struck down. As much as I would love to see Trump, you know, basically forbidden by a sore loser law, that would be hilarious. But we kind of also need to prevent him or any other more dangerous Republican from getting back into the White House. So if these laws get tested, hopefully they do not stand. Hopefully Trump loses the primary, runs his third party cruising Democrats to a very easy victory that may be long shot wishful thinking, but every now and then, it’s fun to be optimistic about something, isn’t it?
